Yes, it’s still a long time away, but on the 9th of May Almuñécar will be the venue for the XII Encuentro de Bolillos 2015.
What, in God’s name, you ask, is that about. Well bolillos is lace making and involves impressively armed middle-aged ladies weaving & knotting cotton threads into intricate designs.
As the event’s name suggests, this is the 12th annual lace makers’ meet in Almuñécar and will be held, as always, in the Parque El Majuelo.
Bolillos associations scream into town from the provinces of Almería, Jaén, Málaga, as well as the local girls of Granada.
Event organizer, Antonia Rivas, explained that they are expecting over 200 bolilleras to turn up for the event in the park, and later descend upon the beach area, pillaging, burning and tea sipping.
But it’s not only rows and rows of lace making wenches in a frenzy, because there will also be a bit of live music and stalls where lace-making materials and equipment can be bought. Actually, I saw an elderly gent sitting amongst them the year before last, busily churning out lace – he looked gaunt… I don’t think they had been feeding him.
So, there you have it; you have until the 9th of May to make your peace with the Lord, sell your property and leave town. Alternatively, you could pop along and see how it is done!
