One Billion Rising

ALM 1B Rising OnLOn 14th February women from the Almunecar International Women’s Group, joined by women from the Asociacion Mujeres en Solidaridad con Madres Solas ‘Marisa Sendon’ and the Centro de Mujeres Almunecar, protested against violence to women and girls.

“We sang and danced to Break the Chain – joining hundreds and thousands of women in countries all over the world as part of One Billion Rising.”

Students from the Instiuto Al Ándalus also danced their way round town and interviewed us all in English for their school newspaper.

The One Billion Rise campaign was launched in 2012 because women world wide were no longer able to stay quiet about the fact that one in three women across the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. That’s one billion women and girls!

ALM 1B Rising 02 OnLSo in February, we rise to show our local communities and the world what one billion looks like and show up the injustice that survivors often face.

We danced to express joy and celebrate the fact that we have not been defeated by this violence. We were determined to find a way to create a new kind of consciousness – one where violence will be resisted until it is unthinkable.
