Rubbish Recycling Campaign: Plastochín

ALM PlastochinFirst Motril and now Almuñécar have been the venue for an environmental awareness campaign concerning household-rubbish disposal; i.e. recycling.

The campaign, launched by the Provicial Council and Ecoembes, has the motto: Pon  un plastichín en tu vida (put a plastichín in your life), as part of the Compromiso Amarillo (Yellow Pledge).

The campaign organizes activities for school kids, which in the case of Almuñécar, are the ones from Virgen de la Antigua and La Santa Cruz junior schools

Now, the whole thing is centred around a yellow, plastic rubbish bin, adorned with a stereotype Chinaman’s face; hence its name, plastichín and the “Yellow Pledge.”

Although the cause is noble (a target of collecting ten kilos of rubbish per inhabitant per year) one can’t help feeling that the campaign image is just a bit tacky.

Personally, I detest political correctness, yet I cannot help but feel that if the bin had been named, plastonegro and had a stereotype African face straight out of Tin-Tin emblazoned onto it, more than a few eyebrows would have been raised, especially as it’s aimed at school children.

I wonder what our growing Chinese population think of it? If they are not bothered, then nor should we, I suppose.
