Just when the Plaza de Madrid in Almuñécar was settling down after the trauma of roadworks, the street that connects it to Avenida Juan Carlos has been dug up. It was only last month that the Avenida de Andalucia, which runs through Plaza de Madrid, was reopened to traffic.
However, looking at it positively, the road is being dug up to lay drainage that should do away with rainwater pooling up and flooding the square.
The said street, known as Calle Hurtado de Mendoza and which runs all the way across the P-4, crossing the bridge behind Las Góndolas, will have not only the rain drains emptying into a separate system to the sewage system, but will also have the mains water, telephone and electricity systems renovated.
Once the underground work is completed the road surface will be replaced with the same design as Avenida de Andalucía.
But it is far from over because shortly the beach road from Rió Verde to Paseo del Altillo will be dug up to change the drainage system too. And after that, the upper end of Avenida de Andalucia will be dug up to replace the pipework.
It was only a couple of years ago that the upper end of Avenida de Andalucia had its whole surface changed…
One can only ask oneself how much more surface parking will disappear this time around…
