Fire Station Or Residency for the Elderly?

ALM New Fire Station OnLThe Mayor of Almuñécar has announced that they have granted a building licence for a new fire station on the site of the old medical centre.

Nobody will argue that Almuñécar doesn’t need one.

However, the chief opposition party, the PA (Benavides) claims that this plot was for a Old Persons’ Home and that the present arrangement is a stab in the back, sort of thing, for the town’s elderly citizens.

For those that don’t remember the old medical centre, its now the empty plot on the opposite side of the main road, next to the La Paloma gasoline station.

The PA got together 2,000 signatures (Almuñécar has a population of some 26,000 people) expressing their rejection of this plot being used for anything other than a OAP’s home.

Anyway, the fire station project has a budget of 698,736 euros and is jointly financed by the Town Hall and the Provincial Council.

The facilities will occupy approximately 1,000 sq/m, with a central shed with outbuilding attached to either side. Obviously, the siting of the facilities is ideal for immediate access onto the N-340.

One thing is for certainly, the Almuñécar fire service definitely needed somewhere both adequate and permanent, because they have been shunted around between several temporary location over the years.
