According to the Salobreña branch of the IU, many pieces of equipment from the old sugar factory have disappeared. These historical machines and apparatus are listed pieces of industrial heritage.
When the Junta de Andalucia declared the factory a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) in 2009, it became expressly forbidden to remove anything, after each item was catalogued.
On the 17th of June, 2011, the IU denounced the “uncontrolled dismantling” of the said machinery before both the Junta and the Salobreña Town Hall
The Mayor, five days later, together with municipal engineers, visited the old factory, announcing that he would order periodic checks to make sure that the factory was being dismantled according to plan, and pointed out that not all of the building belonged to the factory, nor all the machinery within them were heritage protected.
Yet now, again, it seems, the machinery is being dismantled and carted off, because there is nobody from the Junta or Town Hall to prevent it. Most of the missing machinery is being boxed up and sent out of the country.
And again, after the IU brought it to their attention, the Town Hall has reacted, but tardily, claims the local leader of the IU, Sr. Coello.
Two pieces of missing equipment is the Filtro del Jarabe (Syrup Filter), which was very valuable because of its age, and the steel diffuser.
