The quality of life for sufferers from Alzheimer’s and their families in Almuñécar and La Herradura has definitely improved, thanks to a joint initiative.
It was back on the 29th of August that Almuñécar was declared a Ciudad Solidaria con el Alzheimer. (Town United against Alzheimer’s); one of the first municipalities to become one.
Now, Almuñécar has taken a further step and created a register for resident Alzheimer’s & dementia suffers and their carers.
The Councillor for Social Welfare and the Asociación de Familiares de Enfermos de Alzheimer (Afavida) signed an accord to create the list, using Afavida‘s database.
Councillor María del Carmen Reinoso said that the Town Hall social services would give their full support to Afavida‘s activities, and increase the amount of funds available. Since 2011 the actual amount has increased from 1,500 euros to 4,675 euros.
She went on to explain that the idea is that resident Alzheimer’s sufferers can be collected from their homes (their habitual abodes having been included on the register) and taken to municipal facilities, such as the medical centre.
Again, another advantage is that should somebody become lost and disorientated around town, once the person’s identity is established they can be taken straight home.
The Chief of Local Police, Manuel Ledesma, pointed out that the accord is not only to increase the personal safety of Alzheimer sufferers but also to
put their families at greater ease.
Finally, the Chairwoman of Afavida considered the accord as “very interesting” in their endeavour to improve the life of their members.
