It’s not just in table tennis that our Almuñécar youngsters are wiping the floor with the competition!
We’ve been following the illustrious sporting career of Miss Cristina Torrecillas (see photo) for a while now; and it seems that together with her partner Carlota García, these young ladies have managed to fight their way to the top in the padel stakes within the National Minors Circuit to gain the Adidas Trophy at the prestigious Madrid club Ciudad de la Raqueta.
The young pair were clearly victorious, winning all their sets against opponents in the quarter and semi finals. Although the girls strongly outstripped the competition, local youths José Maria Sánchez Borrajo and Guillo Llenderroza also performed brilliantly, achieving third place in the Junior category.
These achievements cannot be underestimated, when you take into account that there were over 1,200 participants in the competition. And with a 23% rise in the number of players since last year’s tournament, it’s obvious that the game is becoming increasingly popular and interestingly, an attractive marketing tool for sponsors such as Peugeot.
It would be a good move if the political powers that be could get some more sponsorship and active investment in sport into our own humble Costa Tropical.
