Of all the dangers you might imagine involved in lying on the beach, the least likely is a rock falling on your head and killing you – yet it happened.

The victim was a 73-year-old Frenchwoman who had been sunbathing on the Playa de Portilligat in Cadequés (Gerona), which is a nice little cove.

Suddenly a 5-kilo rock tumbled down the cliff and hit the woman on the head, taking her life.

Local authorities believe that recent rains had loosened it’s hold on the cliff surface, ten metres above, and chance would have it that it fell when it did, and the woman put her towel down where she did – such is fate.
