Alcoholera First Phase Complete

MOT Alcoholera OnLThe first phase of the work on Motril’s old factory, La Alcoholera, has been completed. The Mayor Sra. Garcia Chamorro, visited the site.

The Provincial Council financed this initial work with a budget of 150,000 euros, which consisted of reinforcing the old factory wall that runs alongside the the Port Road, and reorganize the space inside accordingly, as the factory is catalogued as Industrial Heritage.

One of the old buildings within the factory compound is going to be done up to become a centre for drug user rehab, and the building where this service was housed will become will become a day centre for the elderly. However, the day centre is still in need of funding.

The second phase of work on the Alcoholera will include pergolas and play areas for children.

The Town Council Spokesman, Nicolás Navarro announced that the area will be closed to traffic as a necessary step to protect the site.

Parts of the factory that will be conserved are the chimney stack, administrative buildings and the warehouses. In addition, the Town Hall will turn a piece of land next to the municipal pool into a parking area.

Finally, the Mayor couldn’t resist saying that when there is a will to cooperate between different administrations, things get done – the comment was a shot at the socialist run Regional Government. What she didn’t mention is that the Provincial Council who funded the project and the Motril Town Hall are both run by the same party….
