This type of fresh-water mussel first appeared in the Pantano de Bermejales in 2009, when an adult specimen was found there. Now, five years on, parts of the shoreline have clusters of them scattered all over the place.
When the first one came to light, the Junta prohibited all use of boats on the water, as they can inadvertently be brought in stuck to their hulls. It appears that this precaution didn’t work.
The zebra mussel originally comes from the Black Sea and first appeared in Spain in 2001 in the mouth of the Ebro.
