The Almuñécar Town Hall has officially rejected the idea of permitting mussel platforms off Cotobro Beach/Punta de la Mona. The project was submitted by Acuicultura de Granada S.L.
The rejection, which was announced by the Farming, Fishing and Environment Department of the Regional Government, was based on the perceived negative impact on the ‘ecosystem,’ as well as clashing with the tourist image of the town.
The Town Hall, however, merely reflected the total rejection by several local entities and sectors, such as the Municipal Tourism Board, the Hotel Association for the Costa Tropical and two diving schools; Buceo Tropical and Jorbla
The Town Hall also considers that the close proximity of Marina de Este could be dangerous to craft using the marina.
According to the project submitted, the mussel-farming installations would have involved 20 platforms, each with a surface area of 1,963 sq/m, giving a total area of 45,000 sq/m, including the surrounding safety zone.
Note: The photo is of existing installations in the North of Spain.
