San Juan in Almuñécar

ALM San Juan2Although the weather wasn’t exactly beach weather, San Juan went off well in Almuñécar.

The town was flooded by young people, flowing down from Granada, to spend that special night on the sand. Plenty of drinks, music… and illegal substances, no doubt.

Think about it; if there is one night of the year when drugs will be pouring onto the Costa Tropical, it is the night of San Juan, which is why the Guardia Civil had control points (Los Pinos roundabout, for example), pulling everybody that looked of clubbing age.

ALM drug check point OnLBesides that ageless tradition of washing your face in the surf at midnight, this year saw dozens of floating hot-air lanterns amongst the crowds. The idea is to launch them making a wish – no doubt the firemen were wishing fervently that they didn’t make it to the parched countryside. Fortunately, it was too windy to get many, if any, launched.

The firemen had their work cut out, as it was, trying to keep the large bonfires under control because of the gusting wind.
