The Mossos d’Esquadra (Catalán regional police) arrested a Slovenian man in Lérida for fraud; he allegedly amputated his own leg to receive an insurance payout.
The 46-year-old man reportedly used an axle grinder to severe his leg below the knee, three months after having taken out several health insurances with payouts between 150,000 and 200,000 euros in cases of amputations.
The incident occurred at his old place of work – he had been fired days earlier – whilst, he says, he was there to pick up some of his belongings.
Editorial note: Hmmm… he was sure ‘unlucky’ to be found out; who would have imagined foul play? And this is where I miss having a rolling-eye smilie to hand…
