You can best sum up the European Election results in Spain as: Yes we can; Ouch we won; and, We lost again!
Yes we can: is the translation of the party name of the new kids on the block, Podemos, who sent a shock wave through the two main parties, focusing citizen discontent against austerity measures and corruption.
Ouch, we won: is the reaction of the PP, who won the elections but has suffered a huge loss in voters across the country.
We lost again: is the the reaction of the PSOE, whose tailspin continues. But there is hope for them; in Andalucia the PP vote tumbled leaving them as regional winners. Here in Granada, the PSOE took three out of every four municipalities; Almuñécar was not one of them, whilst Salobreña and Motril were.
The fact is that in the 2009 European elections the two major parties attracted 80% of the votes, but now they can’t even manage 50% between them – something is broken, from their point of view, and the question is can it be fixed?
Whilst the generalized defeat of the main opposition party resulted in the immediate resignation of the party leader, the Government appears bent upon overlooking the loss of 6.5-million votes across the country since 2011 and repeats, “We won,” but they fact is, they simply ‘lost’ less than their rivals.
One final fact: Podemos ran their whole E.E. campaign on just 130,000 euros, mostly funded by crowd funding, compared to the millions splashed out by the big parties. They stayed clear of traditional campaigning methods such as mass rallies, posters, etc and just stuck to the social media and TV appearances – it certainly worked.
