III Romería de San Isidro, Almuñécar

ALM Romeria 01 OnLThe III Romería de San Isidro went off well with around 50 decorated cart/floats and dozens of horse riders.

The procession started off in the P-4 and made its way up the Rio Verde riverbed to Torrecuevas. Fortunately, despite a foreboding sky, there was no flood coming the opposite way. However, the Irrigation Association agreed to a request from the romería organisers to flush water down the riverbed to ‘freshen’ the dusty transit.

The procession emerged from the football stadium, led by horsemen followed by the Imagen de San Isidro, pulled by two decorated mules. On Calle Larache they picked up an entourage of around 50 decorated carts and a herd of romeros (suitably attired pedestrians).

ALM Romeria 02 OnLThey crossed the main road at La Paloma and headed for the riverbed via the vega. They then left the riverbed where the municipal bus turns around near the Jete boundary and headed back down the Otívar road from there, ending up at the aqueduct, where the fiesta side of it was held.

The stately pace of the procession meant that it took four hours to get to its destination, as a few stops were made along the way to ‘baptize’ first-time participants with the generously supplied river water.

The Mayor, Trinidad Herrera, said that the turnout had been excellent and thanked the Policía Local and Protección Civil volunteers for their participation, especially for the crossing of the N-340 with its busy traffic.
