A match between Villarreal and Celta, (Liga BBVA) was interrupted close to the end when a CS canister was thrown onto the pitch.
Only three minutes were left of extra time when the CS canister started to spew tear gas across the pitch, at first affecting the players before causing chaos in the stands, which had to be evacuated.
The El Madrigal stadium, which has 22,000-seats, was quickly emptied and First-Aid was administered to children and adults, some of whom were vomiting from the affects of this gas, which is used primarily by riot-control police. The canister was very similar to police issue, which can be readily obtained on the Internet.
The canister had landed in the defence area of the Celta end and its goalie ran to inform the referee that he could not continue playing with his eyes streaming.
From the first moments the police tried to locate the culprit, but he had no doubt left the stadium with the rest of the crowd. However, the police continue to examine CCTV footage for clues.
The game was restarted 25 minutes later, when the affects of the gas had dispersed, to play out the remaining three minutes.
