It’s Better Inside…

AND car breakinsA man was released from detention pending trial for 78 alleged car break-ins and in only two days carried out eight more.

The situation has apparently become a farce; the man breaks into cars, is arrested, released pending trial and goes straight away to break into some more. In the space of 40 days he has been through this ‘routine’ three times.

Quite apart from the inadequacies of the legal system to confront this situation, the man’s modus operandi generates more costs for the victim in damages through having the door prized upon than the value of the items removed.

The police in the Northern District of the City of Granada have a nickname for the 39-year-old, which is The Cook (El Cocinero), because it used to be his profession.

They had received a report from a car owner to say that he had found his car with the door forced open. This surprised the police because it had all the hallmarks of El Cocinero, but he was in Albolote prison… or was he? They checked and found out that he had been released after one month, so they went out to find him for a chat.

They found him in the Camino de Cañaveral area of the city where he readily admitted to one of the break-ins, explaining that he was better off ‘in’ than ‘out.’
