A Plaque for Post-War Repression Victims

A plaque was placed in the La Herradura cemetery in honour of the three Almuñéqueros and two Motrileños who were executed on the 29th of November 1947 by the Guardia Civil. The homage ceremony took place on the 20th of November, which is the anniversary of the military uprising in 1936 that signalled the beginning of the Spanish Civil War.

According to the investigation carried out by Professor José María Azuaga at the University of Granada, these five members of the Marquis had been captured by the Guardia Civil along the cuesta del Marchante, La Herradura, in an area known as the Collado.

They were put up against the cemetery wall and shot, then their bodies were paraded along the beach, slung over the backs of donkeys, before being buried in an unmarked pit next to the cemetery wall.

The Asociación para la Recuperación de la Memoria Histórica carried out the homage which ended with the placing of the said plaque. A high-ranking official from the Junta, as well as members of the Almuñécar Town Council were present, together with relatives of the victims.
