Abandoned houses in the old town of Almuñécar (San Miguel) continue to cause concern. Recently one such house in Calle San Joaquín caused alarm when part of the roof gave way, with the owner inside. She was unharmed and it was indeed fortunate that the three children were away at school.
Town-hall workers and local firemen were soon on the scene to shore up remaining roof and walls, as well as erecting a barrier to stop people passing that way along the street. The family, however, continue to live inside.
The neighbourhood association is unhappy with the situation and considers that the Town Council should takes measure to solve the deficiencies in the house, as, they say, the family as the right to live in a dignified and safe manner.
Furthermore, as this latest incident is just one in a series of such happenings in the old town, owing to the lamentable state of some old uninhabited houses, the association demands that the Mayor, Trinidad Herrera, adopts measures to bring about an “integral rehabilitation” of this historic quarter of the town, known as Barrio del Castillo.
