A 4-year-old boy drowned in an abandoned tobacco factory, whilst his parents were taking photographs.
The factory, which is located in the De la Paz industrial estate in Granada, has many rooms and works, and in one is an open pit filled with rain water.
The emergency number 112 received a frantic call at 18.15h on the 3rd of February. The call centre immediately alerted the fire station in the north of the city, as well as police and ambulance.
Unfortunately, the child had already long drowned by the time that the emergency service had arrived – the parents were also too late. Apparently the boy had wandered off and the parents had frantically began calling him and with no response, the ran through the rooms looking for him. They phoned the Maracena Policía Local, as well as relatives, who also searched with them, which was when his whereabouts was discovered – the child was submerged and motionless.
The Guardia Civil consider that the child was attracted by the still reflective surface of the water, which acted like a mirror. The pit must have looked like a shallow puddle to the small child, but it was in fact four metres deep.
