A project belonging to the Turismo Sostenible de la Costa contemplates improvement work on the town’s castle. The Town Hall considers the castle to be the flagship of tourist attractions in Almunecar and thus merits a 266,000-euro restoration programme. The Castillo de San Miguel has received 20,000 visitors in the last three years.
Work to be carried out includes a museum and general work around the inside of the castle to make it more tourist-friendly. At the moment the project is out to tender, but once a contractor is chosen, the work should take six months to conclude.
Hands up those who remember when the castle was the municipal cemetery? When the workers moved in to clear the niches, school kids turned up in their classrooms bearing skulls, thigh bones and other grisly relics, bless them.
