The socialists have complained – bitterly – that Almuñécar is going to have to return money to dependents; i.e., people who need help for their everyday needs. According to this opposition party, the amount is around 600,000 euros.
This is the sum that the Junta transferred to the Town Hall to provide social services for those with physical limitations, such as the elderly. The funds were never paid over, apparently – certainly not to the full extent. Of a total of 775,000 euros received, only 185,000 was spent as intended, the rest was returned.
According to Francisco Prados, who is the head of the local branch of the PSOE, the Mayor, in his ‘battle with the Junta,’ had taken as hostage all those that require assistance in the township. Not one to spare adjectives where the Mayor is concerned, he described Sr. Benavides attitude as “arbitrary, unjust, and in some cases, inhuman.”
