Later in October, the Academic Choir of Aarhus (www.akademisk-kor-aarhus.dk) will be in the area to give two concerts. The first concert is on Sunday Oct. 18th at 8:00 pm at La Iglesia de Santos Mártires, Plaza Mártires in Málaga. The second concert in on Monday, Oct. 19th at 9:00 p.m. at La Iglesia de El Salvador, Balcón Europa in Nerja.

We received the following information about the choir from one of the organizers: The Choir, founded in 1985, is an amateur choir characterized by ambition and professional dedication. The choir consists of 34 young singers, many of which are associated with the musical life at, and around, the University of Aarhus and the Royal Academy of Music. Ole Faurschou, a graduate from the Royal Danish Academy of Music, has been the conductor of the choir since the summer of 2005 and has also studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna.

Musically, Academic Choir of Aarhus covers a wide range of genres and it is the goal of the choir to present the audience with an interesting and varied repertoire. Contemporary Danish and Scandinavian choral music are common themes in the repertoire, but a broad variety of genres are simultaneously treated, from the strict polyphonic music of the Renaissance through the intense emotionality of the 19th century music to first performances of works by Danish composers.

Apart from working with an expressive and homogeneous sound, Academic Choir of Aarhus is conscious of its obligation to communicate the joy and delight engendered by music as an integral part of the listening experience. Academic Choir of Aarhus has performed in as varied places as Estonia, the Faeroe Islands, the Czech Republic, Italy, Germany, France, Hungary, England, Canada and China.

Throughout the years it has achieved prizes at competitions in Tallinn (Estonia), Budapest and Debrecen (Hungary), Arezzo (Italy) and Powell River (Canada). In July, 2006, the choir won three 1st place prizes at the 8th International Chorus Festival in Beijing, China, including best choir, best performance of the compulsory piece and best conductor.
