Three different companies have expressed interest in building the Cortijo del Conde leisure & shopping centre. The proposed installations would be along the lines of Málaga province’s Ingenio, which attracts thousands of shoppers from over the border in Granada.
Municipal Delegate for Urban Development, José Luis Chica, explained that the 500,000-sq/m project had still not been put up for bidding, as the plan still has to be approved by the Sub-Regional Committee, something that is believed to be happening by the beginning of this month. However, even with that green light, the Town Hall will have to alter its PGOU and have that approved in turn, so we are talking about another year before the chosen construction company lays the first brick.
Whoever actually builds the centre is looking to spend around 30 million euros. Furthermore, Salobreña has a similar project that will materialise right on the municipal border with Motril, so there is expected to be some strong competition for customers there. The said Delegate, however, considered that the proximity of the two leisure & shopping centres would ‘compliment’ each other, whilst admitting that they are hell bent on the Motril one opening its doors first.
