When You’re Little by Ella Umley

It’s strange how when you’re young you see the world as a completely innocent place; where your mum and dad are your best friends, Father Christmas fills your stocking and the tooth fairy leaves money under your pillow. Everything is so simple and you can’t understand why your parents get stressed or worried, when they receive little white letters in the post. You never get letters in the post and surely it’s not as bad as growing out of your favourite clothes, which were two sizes too small last year. Your mum always telling you when pinning you down while you chewed on your toothbrush and tried hard to swallow the toothpaste “You’ll thank me when your older!” and you think; how would scrubbing at my teeth make me want to say thank you to my Mum. I think the thing that I said to my mum most when I was a child was probably “I’m not tired!” after falling over and hitting my head while trying to fall asleep standing up. I couldn’t understand why my eldest cousin got annoyed when she had homework because that was the only reason I was excited about starting ‘big’ school. The only time you would shout at your Mum was when you couldn’t have a 13th sweetie because you couldn’t understand why they would rot your teeth.
