Football Euphoria

Last week, during my and Nils Öhrvall’s art exhibition at Casa de la Cultura in Almuñécar, a member of the culture house staff asked me from where I was. When he heard that I was from Finland, he said “Oh that’s the country playing against Spain in Gijon on March 22 in the World Cup qualifiers. Finland is not a big football country. I bet the game will end 6-0 for Spain”.

Flu Times

The winter cold has arrived to our tropical paradise. In this time of the year I sometimes wish I were nearer the North pole, feeling warm and cosy inside and avoiding to step outside unless absolutely necessary. In our old house on top of the hill in Taramay it is nearly as chilly inside as outside, in spite of some energy-devouring electric appliances. All kinds of influenza viruses are hitting the good people of Almuñécar.

Living Happily With Less

Most of Europe is in crisis. In Greece, Spain, Italy and Portugal people demonstrate against the draconian cost-cutting measures imposed by the EU on member countries in deep financial trouble.

Culture in the Rain

During the rainy second week of July we paid a visit to Sweden to meet our dear friends and undertake a cultural trip to the beautiful landscape of Dalecarlia, this time with the main purpose of educating ourselves in the field of classical music. We arrived at our hotel in Tällberg in pouring rain, and thus did not see much of the beautiful landscape. It has been said that, “If you are visiting Sweden and the county of Dalecarlia without visiting Tällberg, it’s like attending a wedding without meeting the bride.”

Praise and Criticism

I love Andalucia, and especially Costa Tropical and the whole Granada province. Not only because it is the only region where you get free tapas with your midday or evening copa.

Utöya in Memoriam

Friday 22nd July 2011 will forever be etched into our memory as the day when small, peaceful Norway was struck by large-scale terrorism for the first time in history.

Populism on the Rise

A populist and mostly right-wing wave is washing up over the Nordic countries. They have brought anti-immigrant rhetoric and policies that were unthinkable just a few years ago.
This trend has had political consequences for traditional politics in the Nordic region. However, despite their rapid rise, most nationalist and populist parties still lack voter support on election day.

The Unmentionables & A Mention

When writing this, a cold wind from the North blew away my washing from the line on the kitchen patio: sheets, pillowcases, ‘unmentionables’ – you name it – are now impaled on the Bougainvillea bushes and lemon trees below.

Embarking on the 2nd Decade

When writing this I am listening to the traditional ceremony of December 22nd, with children singing out winning numbers for the Spanish Christmas Lottery, perhaps the biggest lottery worldwide. The total amount of prizes paid out is about 2,3 billion euros.

Christmas Thoughts

The streets of Almuñécar, Motril and Granada have been tingling with Christmas paraphernalia for weeks now, and the shops are crowded with people buying all kinds of goodies, dolls and plastic toys.
