Nerja has a problem, the business sector says; they cannot find workers and the reason is that there is no affordable housing for them.

Consequently, the AEN is forming a specialised task force to come up with solutions for Nerja’s affordable housing crisis. It will bring together urban planners, private, business owners across multiple sectors, as well as association representatives.

Once they have beaten out a plan, they will present clear, short, medium and long-term actions to follow.

The fact is that high housing costs have flattened out the local population at 22,132 residents, blocking young people and new families from moving in. As a consequence the housing shortage directly compromises the future of local commerce, hospitality, and overall services.

The first official meeting will take place in September to establish a working methodology. The group will focus heavily on land availability, public-private partnerships, and boosting long-term rental options.

The AEN previously pushed for dedicated housing land and higher building limits in Nerja’s northern zone during June’s General Municipal Urban-Planning Plan (PGOU ) public forum.

So what’s causing the housing shortage? Data reveals that 16.36% of registered homes in Nerja are used for tourism, marking the highest ratio in the entire province. Previously, this high concentration of holiday lets prompted Nerja’s Mayor to announce that the Town Hall is exploring a freeze on new tourist housing licences.
