Towns are starting to come round to thinking that having firework displays during their summer fiestas might not be such a good idea, following all the wildfires in Spain, France and Canada.

For this reason, three villages in the interior of Axarquía have cancelled their end-of-fiestas firework displays. They are Iznate, Cómpeta, and Arenas. Furthermore, they all urge locals to report any sign of smoke in the campo immediately to the Emergency Coordination Centre, 112.

In Iznate, Mayor Gregorio Campos issued an official decree establishing an absolute ban on fireworks, firecrackers, flares, and sky lanterns/chinese lanterns in or near woodland areas, warning of fines up to 450,000 euros or up to 20 years in prison for arson.

In Cómpeta, they have broadcast warnings emphasising that minor carelessness carries severe consequences, strictly prohibiting fireworks near dry grass etc and calling for maximum public cooperation.

Finally, in Arenas they suspended the scheduled fireworks display and firecrackers (tracas) for its upcoming fiestas, although there will still be live music, fairground attractions, and culinary events.

There have already been small fires in the Axarquía, in Árchez, Canillas de Albaida, and Cómpeta.
