Semana Santa on the Roads

The DGT is launching its Semana Santa 2026 operation, running from 15:00h on March the 27th (today) until midnight on Monday the 6th of April.

The DGT calculates that there will be over 400,000 road trips taken during the Easter holidays, which is a complicated situation to cover as there is a high traffic load in such a short time, with most of the traffic heading in one direction, depending on the date.

Operation Phases

Phase 1: From today from 15:00h until Sunday, March the 27th 29 (midnight). Approximately 103,000 trips are expected.

Phase 2: From Wednesday, April the 1st until Monday, April the 6th (midnight). Approximately 235,000 trips are expected, with heavy flow returning to urban centers.

High traffic volume is expected on the A-395, A-44, A-7, A-92, A-92G, GR-14, N-340, and N-432, as well as secondary roads leading to tourist resorts and holiday homes.

With that amount of traffic on the road, there are bound to be accidents. Last year, for instance there were 26 accident. However, nobody died although four people required being hospitalised.

To ease the return to the city of Granada from the Costa Tropical and minimise traffic congestion on the A-44 there will be extra lanes taken from the oncoming lanes.

The extra lane will be active on Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday from 17:00h until at least 21:00h, subject to real-time traffic conditions.
