ITVs & Emergency Beacons

The introduction of the V16 emergency beacon as an obligatory accessory for motorists has caused a lot of doubts, though most have been answered... except one.

What happens when you take your hot-rod in for its ITV (Technical Vehicle Inspection)? Will inspectors ask to see the beacon to verify that you have one?

Well, let’s start with what the ITV inspectors check: vehicle identification (make, model, chassis number and license plate, Tarjeta de Inspección Técnica and the Permiso de Circulación (which is not the same as your Carnet de Conducir)

The condition of the bodywork, chassis, and exterior; visibility (windows) and elements such as windshield wipers, mirrors, windows, etc.; interior (seat belts, seats, child restraint systems); lighting (the operation of the defroster, demister, anti-theft system, and speedometer are verified).

Gas emissions (exhaust pipe); braking; steering; axles, wheels, and suspension; engine; transmission; fluid levels and engine condition, paying special attention to oil leaks and the condition of its mounts, the battery, the fuel tank, pipes, and potential leaks in the fuel system.

Yep, it’s a long list (clearly specified on the DGT website) but what is not included, it appears, is a requirement to show the possession of a V16 signaling device. However, the obligation to show warning triangles was not specified in the past, either.

Soooo… perhaps it is not checked, but you would be silly to count on this.

Hi, Roberto, I’m a bike rider and I stopped to ask the Guardia Civil traffic police about this. The officer radioed in and confirmed that bike riders do not need one, the same as we are no obligated to carry a set of emergency triangles. On my Honda Rebel 500 there is nowhere to put one anyway, as the highest point is the plastic back box which is no good for this magnetic beacon.

Best bet would be just to leave it on the front seat or dashboard. One question is I have been told I need one for my scooter, not sure if this is right or not. Needless to say I have one to be on the safe side plus you never know when you might need it.
