Salobreña’s Romería

Salobreña's Romería del Sur reached its peak on Sunday with a procession of romeria floats starting from Plaza Juan Carlos I at 11.00h and very colourful it was.

They were led by the Banda de Música de Salobreña, followed by the float bearubg the Virgen’s effigy, pulled by a pair of oxen.

Also within the procession was the Hermandad del Rosario and the Grupo Cantares singing rocieras such as Ave María, which is tremendously moving when performed by a choir.

The fully decked out floats and literally hundreds of riders and many horse-drawn buggies wound their way down to the Paseó Marítimo, where they parked in their allotted places.

Once there, there was a mass given in honour of the Virgen. Set in an festive atmosphere it lasted all day. There was the official marquee where musical performances were held and food and drinks served.

As far as the best-decorated-float competition goes, the total amount handed out as prizes was 1,600, with 800 going to the winner, 500 to second place and 300 as a third prize.

As for who won, Una y Nos Vamos (One and We’re Off) took first prize with its Cortijo Andaluz design, including a porch and plenty of Fajalauza (Granada-style ceramics).

2nd Prize

The second prize went to La Taberna Ambulante, (Wandering Tavern) and third prize went to La Pava (which means both a hen turkey or a kettle pot… and more! Google: hacer la pava).

Today will be the final day although not as spectacular as Sunday nor will it have the turn out, naturally and don’t forget that it is a local public holiday.
