The Granada Public Health Defense Board (MDSP-GRANADA) has been saying for years that the financing & management problems of the province's healthcare system are having dire consequences.
The following is their communiqué:
“We recently learned terrible news that demonstrates this. The Andalusian, breast-cancer screening programme has suffered an inexcusable failure in the process of communicating the results of screening mammograms.

Some people who had these tests were not informed about the results, even when the result led to a recommendation to complete the study due to suspected cancer (with a second mammogram later or with more invasive tests).
The exact number of people affected remains unknown, but in these cases, women underwent radiological testing without obtaining the expected benefit of early diagnosis of breast cancer. Let us also remember that mammograms are not harmless tests.
Patient associations have documented cases in which diagnosis has been made much later than desireable for this reason, with the resulting worsening of the disease’s prognosis.
Errors are not always avoidable, but in this case, we are convinced that the political decision not to invest in and sustain the public health system has left affected women unprotected and put our health at risk.
From the MDSP-GRANADA, we demand that the Andalusian Government review the functioning of these protocols and that the Public Health System be provided with adequate funding and hiring of appropriate professionals so that these situations, which cause so much suffering, do not occur again.”
