Salvamento Marítimo was called out to tackle a fishing boat on fire eight nautical miles off Faro de Calaburras (Mijas).
The 4-man crew belonging to this trawler, which was based in Fuengirola, were picked up safe and sound.

The first SOS was picked up at 15.05h on Tuesday which was sent out from another trawler to say that they had come across the other vessel in flames and that the crew were floating next to it in a life-raft. They reported that they, and another fishing boat, had picked up the crew and taken them to Fuengirola.
Salvamento Marítimo immediately sent out the Salvamar Alnitak rescue launch and the Helimer 220 rescue helicopter. They also said that a Customs launch had been near the scene and was trying to put the fire out using high-pressure hoses.
However, it proved impossible to put the fire out before the fishing boat, Pedro Benzal, finally sank.
On the same day, Salvamento Marítimo also had to deal with the resuce of two people on a paddel board, 500 metre of the coast, in front of Manilva, (Málaga) who couldn’t get back in due to the easterly strong wind and current.
