Baby Left in Car Dies

A man in his early 70s has been arrested after leaving A 20-month-old baby in his car, resulting in its death.

This incident occurred yesterday, on Calle Pintor El Greco in the town of Linares (Jaén).

The baby was in the custody of foster parents and the 72-year-old, foster father normally takes the baby to nursery, informing them that he is heading over to drop it off. However, on this occasion, he omitted to inform the nursery and drove off again without realising that he still had the baby onboard.

Had he remembered to inform the nursery that he was bringing the baby, and time had passed without the baby arriving, they would have phoned him to find out what was happening. Nobody phoned and he left the car parked on the said street and walked home.

It was only when the foster mother went to pick up the baby from the nursey that the error was discovered. Questioning her husband, they realised that the baby had to be in the car.

Although the car was parked along a street with lots of pedestrian traffic passing by, nobody saw the baby inside because the car had tinted windows.

However, the emergency coordination centre (112) did received a call from a passerby at 14.55h to say that a child was inside a parked vehicle. The centre immediately despatched an ambulance but when the paramedics onboard examined the baby and tried desperatedly to revive the child using CPR, in the end this proved impossible.

The baby’s body has been taken to the Instituto de Medicina Legal for an autopsy. The man was released but faces a charge of negligent manslaughter.
