The Death of a Generous Priest

Father Francisco Peinado, who died yesterday at the age of 92, had been the parish priest in several municipalities within Granada.

Amongst them were Almuñécar, Jete, Lentegí and Otívar, where he officiated services from when he was ordained in 1961 until 1973.

After that he was the village priest in Mamola, Gualchos and Castell de Ferro between 1976 and 1990. He remained as priest in the last one until 1994 when he was given the responsibiity of La Gorgoracha & Lagos before moving on to Vélez de Benaudalla, which is where this article centres itself.

Whilst he was the priest there, he played and won a bit on the Christmas National Lottery. The prize money was 100,000 euros, as it was a second prize and he only had a decimo, otherwise with the full number it would have been a million euros.

But it doesn’t matter how much it was because he didn’t intend to keep it but decided instead to share it out amongst the most needy in the village. Father Francisco handed out between 60 euros and 6,000 euros to 250 families.

Editorial comment: you don’t have to wear the cloth to have a kind heart and not all those that wear the cloth have kind hearts, but Father Francisco possessed both.
