Motril Port Emergency Drill

Apparently (according to letters sent out to those living near the port) there will be an emergency drill in the port on Tuesday the 17th involving an "accident with toxic chemicals."

Now, this has caused a bit of consernation, according the socialist opposition party, PSOE, at least, because the proximity of ‘chemical’ storage tanks has long been a beef for residents in nearby housing to the port.

The socialist councillor for this area (the barrios of El Varadero and Santa Adela) Silivia Piqueras, said that upon receiving the letters explaining what to do in a real chemical-spill or toxic-gas-leak situation, it brought it home to these residents the danger of living next to such installations.

Councillor Piqueras suggested that instead of scaring the hell out of everybody, the Port Authorities should have provided more information to increase awareness.

“It is good to make known contingency plans, but not in this way,” she remarked, adding, “Locals are scared, and instead of informing them of the drill for this coming Tuesday with notes dropped in letter boxes, they should have prepared awareness campaigns through the media.”

The socialist spokesperson went on to say that local residents find themselves “forced” to stay at home because of the stink coming from the port and not to mention the bother caused by the noise generated by port activity.
