Evacuees Allowed to Return

Around a thousand people, who were evactuated from two a camping sites in Torre del Mare and Almayate on Wednesday because of the torrential downpours, were allowed to return to them yesterday.

The two camping sites, Playa de Torre del Mar and Almanat in Almayate, were evacuated out of precaution when Río Vélez burst its banks on Wednesday.

The campers, most of whom were foreigners, were temporarily accommodated in the Maestro Salvador Sánchez sports pavilion in Torre del Mar Wednesday night.

Although a thousand people were evacuated from the camping sites, most of them managed to find elsewhere to spend the night so that only about 300 campers actually passed the night in the sports facilities.

In Vélez-Málaga emergency personnel were called out to rescue a total of 22 people in the area of the rivermouth. The Vice-Mayor of Torre del Mar, Jesús Carlos Pérez Atencia, said that there had been perfect coordination between the emergency services and Cruz Roja in the evacuation operation and finding them alternative accommodation for the night.

The shanty town settlement, Casillas de la Vía, was also evacuated.
