We resume our tastings of the wines from the south. This month we are in the Sierras de Málaga: Encaste Cosecha (2022) – Bodega Doña Felisa.
This is an extensive Denominacion de Origin (D.O.) that encompasses most of Málaga province.
The D.O. comprises seven sub-regions, one of which is Serrania de Ronda, famous for its small microclimates that give it a particularly diverse range of wine styles.
Serrania de Ronda has a strong Atlantic influence, which in addition to its Mediterranean climate, abundant winter rain and the limestone hills where vineyards can reach 1,000m above sea level, combine to give the region a dramatic temperature variation between day and night, ideal for grape ripening and flavour development.
Bodega Doña Felisa is located north of Ronda, near the ancient Roman city of Acinipo, at 900m and is surrounded by three natural parks. Wine was probably made in this area since those Roman times.
The mix of landscape and climate allow for the production of a variety of wines, and Bodega Doña Felisa has a broad range of white, rose, red, sparkling and sweet wines.
Encaste Cosecha is made from Syrah, Tempranillo and Garnacha. Fermented at a controlled temperature of 22-24ºC, Encaste Cosecha is a young wine without aging, harvested in September 2022 and bottled in December of the same year.
It is clear, bright, redcurrant red with an intense violet rim, and moderate to heavy legs or tear. The nose is rich with blackberry and blackcurrant with aromas of white flowers and subtle spices, especially black pepper.
In the mouth, it is fresh, silky smooth, with pleasant entry, with dominated by ripe red fruit sweet notes, with a long finish. Difficult to believe this is not a Crianza.
Serve at 16oC with a Manchego cheese, grilled tuna, or roasted vegetables.
8.50-10.0 EUR; will be available from Olivares in Almuñécar, or by mail order from the Bodega.
Note: Encaste Cosecha has a sister wine, Encaste, a Crianza made of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, which is certainly worth a try.
88-90 Bruja points.
