The Town Hall of Torre de Benagalbón want to revive a project for a beach pathway using EU recovery funds for Covid, which has run up against the locals.
It was two years ago that the residents forced the Town Hall to hold a referendum on the said project choosing between an extensive or reduced version of the project; the latter won.
The footpath would run 3.6 kilometres along the coast through, what the protectionist group, ADN paseo de la Torre, considers the last part of unspoilt coast within the municipality and even within eastern Málaga, together with La Carraca in Torrox.
“This is a place where the ecosystem has remained intact,” explains the communiqué from the ADN. The dunes have survived thanks to the presence of pancratium marítimum, better known as the Sea Daffodil. This flower has deep roots that help hold the sand in place. The good news is that their number is growing.
The neighbourhood association considers that the stretch of beach along Torre de Benagalbón is somewhere that the hand of Man has not spoilt.
” We would like and request that we locals and tourist can continue to enjoy this tiny spot, occupying just 2,500 metres in a straight line without a cemented paseo being constructed on it,” continues the communiqué.
Furthermore, the association considers the idea of using EU recovery funds for Covid as questionable, as they are intended to aid economic recovery and not for construction projects.
“What is the sense of using these funds on a construction project that nobody wants? Wouldn’t it be more logical to use them on another part of the economy,” they reason.
