First Cádiz and now Almuñécar; a political party wants to change the name of a street bearing the ex-King’s name to something else.
The left-wing coalition party Adelante comprising of Izquierda Unida and Podemos has put forward a motion to change the name of one of Almuñécar’s main thoroughfares from Avenida Juan Carlos I to Avenida del Mar.
Whilst “Mar” is not a bad name seeing as it connects the top of town directly to the beach road and thus the sea, the reason for wanting to change it is liable to cause turbulence with the Mayor, who governs thanks to the one seat that Adelante has on the Town Council – without which, she would lose her majority.
According to Adelante Almuñécar it escapes nobody’s notice that the ex-King’s “fleeing the country is in response to the fact that he can not hold any public post.”
The party Spokesperson, Gabino Ovalle, went on to say, “We’re not talking about suppositions,” adding, “we find ourselves before a behaviour that we would condemn under any circumstance… … because it is not right to honour somebody who used his position for personal benefit.”
