Yesterday saw young volunteers outside the main supermarkets in Almuñécar collecting food donations from shoppers to be used to restock the food banks.
Event organisers, Cáritas Parroquial, estimates that there were around 3,500 kilos (3.5 tonnes) collected, although they still haven’t had a chance to stock check yet to find an exact figure.
Volunteers did a 12-hour day, from 09.00 to 21.00h, at the entrances or just inside the supermarkets, handing out special shopping bags for shoppers to place the prime-necessity foodstuffs in when they went in and to accept the purchased items and sort them into crates.
Both Mercadona supermarkets (P4 & San Cristobal) and lidl’s took part, as well as smaller ones such as San Pablo (Calle Trapiche 4- Barrio San Sebastián), Autoservicio Los Arcos (Calle Escamado,7) Autoservicio Cala (Avenida Cala 13) and Supermercado Ruiz (Avenida Costa del Sol).
Once again the personal generosity of residents and visitors manifests itself in these acts of solidarity.
