Alarmed residents on Plaza Pablo Picasso in Almuñécar alerted the emergency services to a fire climbing up the facade of Clínica Almusalud and affecting urban furniture.
This is far from the first fire in that area as a year or two ago there was a spate of arson in that precise area. Readers might recall the fire in the underground parking of a block of flats.
But you don’t have to go back a year or two for suspicious fires because this very week there have been two: a bike parked outside a house and a car were completely torched.
Back to this latest incident, the Policía Local, Guardia Civil and fire service received a call out around two in the morning. The police officers tackled what they could with extinguishers but due to the intensity of the flames they made little headway and the fire had now spread to a palm tree and a churros kiosk.
With the Almuñécar fire service fully deployed they soon brought it under control before finally extinguishing and clearing the smoke from the clinic around three in the morning.
However, the fire revived in the palm tree around 08.00h and the fire service had to return to finally put it completely out.
The Guardia Civil are now investigating the cause the fire.
