The area hospital in Motril now has an endocrine specialist, which is good news for diabetics who will no longer have to go up to Granada to see one.
In fact, not only will there be a specialist doctor in endocrinology and nutrition, but there will also be a nurse who will be able to give expert advise on living with type-one diabetes. Both these medical personnel have been transferred form the Hospital Universitario Clínico San Cecilia in the city of Granada.
One of the objectives of this new team is to introduce a new glucose sensor (Flash System) for controlling the condition so that during this year most patients down here will be using one; some 400 type-1 diabetics.
A flash glucose monitoring system measures your sugar levels continuously throughout the day, allowing doctors to see how your sugar levels change over time, including whilst you are asleep.
The device, however, does not actually measure your blood-sugar levels but rather the sugar levels under your skin, known as interstitial fluid.
The device is a sensor that you wear on your arm, with a reader. You can also use a smartphone app to scan the sensor.
