NRJ Maro Cliffs WaterfallSunday saw the death of a man in Nerja from drowning. He had been descending the Maro cliffs when he fell into the water.

The 55-year-old victim, F.C.B., had been in the waterfall area of the cliffs practicing climbing. The emergency number, 112, received a call around 13.30h from his climbing companion and the daughter of the victim. They had  heard him fall into the water and after he had failed to respond to their calls, had phoned in.

It was a jet ski belonging to the Nerja lifeguards that was used to get him of the water. His body had been tangled up in his abseiling rope and equipment.

The cliffs where the three abseilers from Granada had been descending reach some 30 metres in height.

The body was taken to Playa de Maro, which was crowded at the time, causing quite a commotion as the distraught family and friends of the deceased where there. The coroner gave permission for the body to be taken away around 16.30h .

But this wasn’t the only emergency on Sunday near Nerja as a man had to be rescued in Río Higuerón within the municipality of Frigiliana after he fell and fractured his leg. He was evacuated to the Hospital Comarcal de la Axarquía.
