The Guardia Civil has been running checks on the illegal movement of cash between Spain and Portugal, especially by Chinese citizens.
This resulted in the arrest of one such citizen being stopped and the discovery of 440,000 euros inside his car. The sum was confiscated and handed over to Hacienda.
The police had pulled over the high-range car at a spot check and found that the driver was visibly nervous, which raised suspicions. After an intensive search they found the cash inside a hidden compartment within the boot.
The money was divided into 21 separate packets in 50-euros notes wrapped in plastic.
According to the driver, the money was to be used for a commercial transaction in Portugal and thus avoid the payment of taxes in Spain.
