The suspect, a 48-year-old man with no criminal record, had been giving assistance to an elderly married couple on a regular basis for some months; an hour in the morning to help them wash and dress and an hour in the evening to get them ready for bed.
During this time he allegedly stole a diamond watch and a gold bracelet, as well as cash, with a total value of 10,000 euros.
The person who reported the man was a relative of the couple. After talking it over with the couple, they had agreed to the placing of a hidden camera in the sitting room to record what was going on.
Several days later the camera captured images of the helper allegedly helping himself to the contents of a purse, which was in a handbag on a table.
Since 2011, the Guardia Civil has been going round to the homes of the elderly to advise them on how to recognise scams that target their age groups, as well as giving them information and advice on what to do if they find themselves suffering from physical or mental mistreatment.
