Drugged Youth Slays Policeman

SPN Control pointFour youths; two boys and two girls, were involved in the killing of a Civil Guardsman at a road checkpoint. The 17-year-old driver was heavily under the influence of hashish.

The incident occurred in Huesca and resulted in the death of 54-year-old José Antonio Pérez, who had spent 27 years of service in the said township of Barbastro, Huelva.

The other three occupants of the car, aged between 14 and 17, have appeared before the Public Prosecutor for minors.

At the time of the incident (Saturday 5th at 19.35h) the Guardia Civil had been carrying out a routine drink-driving road check at a crossroads. The policeman had waved down an Opel Astra. The driver made as if to stop so the victim approached the car, putting his arms through the window to hand the driver the breathalyser equipment.

At that very moment the driver trapped the policeman’s hands against the steering wheel and hit the accelerator, dragging the policeman 460 metres. The car hit a crash barrier before ricocheting off onto another car, leaving the policeman dying on the road.

The four occupants abandoned the car and ran off into the night. Even though an ambulance was soon on the spot, nothing could be done for the victim and he died there on the road.
Throughout the night, the police carried out investigations to identify the driver and occupants and once concluded the four were arrested.

The Minister of the Interior called for “absolute zero tolerance” for drink-driving and the consumption of drugs at the wheel.

Editorial comment: More and more I get the impression that teenagers today think that life’s some sort of video game that you can reboot when it goes wrong. There seems to be a disconnect with reality that needs to be addressed, which can only be done through swift retribution and a complete revision of unrealistic “minors” considerations.
