Bullfight Split in Almuñécar Town Council

ALM Plenary Meeting AP14 OnLThe left-wing party, the IU, put forward a motion for Almuñécar to join other municipalities in banning bullfights within its municipal limits; i.e., anti-taurino.

Although backed by the centre-left party, the PSOE, the motion was lost when the governing conservative party, the PP, and Benavides’ party, opposed it.

The IU Spokeman, Fermín Tejero, was not happy.

Councillor Tejero had fully expected the conservative PP to vote against the motion but he was sourly disappointed with the PA (formally CA), who, he claims, had shed their “progressive ideology” and finds itself “drifting towards the right wing, thus completely losing its “identity.”

Editorial Comment: Expecting the PP to vote against holding bullfights within the municipality was like expecting them to celebrate Karl Marx’s birthday, so no surprises there but perhaps the real issue here, certainly for Juan Carlos Benavides, is the projected bullring in the still-to-be-approved PGOU.

The said infrastructure is projected to occupy what is now a lorry park on the P-4 below he main road. If the Town Council bans bullfighting how can it justify building a bullring – the alternative is to pull apart the already problematic PGOU.

Without a doubt, Councillor Tejero knows this but he certainly didn’t mention that can of worms.
