A 21-year-old climber was seriously injured yesterday whilst attempting to scale the cliffs above Playa Rijana (Castell de Ferro).
According to the Motril firemen, who carried out the rescue mission, the young man had been ‘free climbing;’ i.e., without a safety rope, when he plummeted over ten metres, hitting his head.
Besides the Motril fire service, also involved was the Maritime Rescue Service, a helicopter and the Guardia Civil.
According to the 112 Emergency Service, the rescue launch was needed because a second person fell into the water and was injured, too. However, the firemen denied that a second person was involved.
The injured man was taken by stretcher up to the N-340 where he was picked up and flown to the main hospital in Granada because of his serious head injuries.
